In 2014, a group of archery enthusiasts within our congregation began to see their hobby/sport as a way to connect and build relationships with youth in Pagosa Springs. As a result, an archery clinic was designed to be held once a month in the backyard of our church property. The shoots begin in May and end in October. In 2016 these events were officially designated as the On-Target For Christ Youth Bow Ministry, being funded in part by a grant from the Colorado Baptist Convention. The archery clinic events are composed of several parts:
- a free hot dog lunch
- a time of evangelistic/discipleship called Target Talk, where a biblical presentation is given about bow/arrows of the Bible
- the archery shooting clinic where youth learn to shoot 3D, paper and novelty targets
- free ice cream served to all
Bows and arrows are provided although the youth may bring their own if they choose. Each youth enters their name into a drawing each time they participate for a chance to win a longbow at the last event in October. A mini tournament, with prizes, is also held during the last event of the season. Volunteer instructors, safety monitors and kitchen help come from a multitude of churches. Additional volunteers are always needed and welcomed as the number of participants continue to grow.
The next scheduled shoot is July 28th at 12:00 p.m.
